CDs cause system hang

5yr old HP Pavillion system on XP home sp 3, all updates. Tower has DVD
writer and CD/DVD-ROM drives. Put a disk in either drive and the system will
choke. No errors are logged, and the behavior and point of hang is not
entirely predictable. Thinking I'd bypass a failing controller, I tried to
install ESET security using an external (USB) CD/DVD drive. Seems fine until
I get to the 3rd system installation screen (enter Username, etc) and it
locks up. No response to cursor, anything. All I can do is force a power off.
Must be a corrupt driver somewhere, I'm thinking. How to fix?
