Yesterday I ran a driver update for my Samsung CDRW/DVD SM - 332B device
running on

Dimension 8100
Pentium IV 1500 MHz
512 MB RAM
Intel Pentium 4 processor with MMX/SSE/SSE 2
Windows XP SP 2 with all updates

After restarting the computer the E: drive disappeared. I am at a loss has
how to recover it. I have searched and searched with no results that I
could use. I did try the cdgone.reg entry and that did not restore the
drive. I have no error messages in the application, security or system log
files. I have tried system restore and a registry restore with no results.

Can someone help me to restore my E: drive? Thank you so very much,
G. T.

Was it a driver update or a firmware update? If it was a firmware update,
try to boot from your XP CD (or any bootable CD) and see if it allows you to
do so. If it does, then at least you know your drive is fine. If it
doesn't... time to contact Samsung (or Dell, if it came from them).

Hi Joe,
It was a firmware not a driver update. I am unable to boot from a CD
because the boot menu does not recognize the CD drive as being install; the
CD drive is not an option in the boot menu.
The drive should be fine. It was working before I tried the firmware
update.

Thank you,
G. T.

If the bios isn't recognizing the drive as even being there then one of the
following has happened:

- You flashed the incorrect firmware
- The firmware installation was interrupted and the device was powered off
before it was completed
- The firmware installation file was corrupted to begin with

In any case, the drive itself is in an unusable state. My suggestion is to
contact Dell (if the drive came from them) or Samsung (if it did not).
Failed firmware installations result in useless hardware most of the time,
and it's possible you'll be purchasing a new drive (thankfully they're not
that expensive; you can get a reliable DVD-R/DVD-RW/CDRW drive for about
30-40 bucks or less).

Of course, these things all assume you didn't open the machine and
disconnect any cables.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I tried them all and them some more. I
have finally bought a new drive. It is actually better than the old ever
was.
