I have two CD RW installed on my computer and they do not
show up in the explorer. I can see them in the Device
Manager but none of them are working. I tried deleting the
devices and re-started the computer so that it would
recognize them and help, but that didn't work.

One of the CDRW came with my machine, its a Philips make,
model no. CDD4801/71. This CDRW was working fine. The
Driver files associated with this CDRW are shown as below
in the Driver details :
C:\WINNT\system32\DRIVERS\CDROM.SYS
C:\WINNT\system32\DRIVERS\REDBOOK.SYS
C:\WINNT\system32\STORPROP.DLL
version no. 5.00.2195.6655
Then I purchased another CDRW Pacific Digital Model CDR
5W48 and that installed by itself when I restarted my
machine. The problem started when I loaded the Nero CD
Burning software that came with it. Although now I have
uninstalled Nero both the CDRW's still don't work. So I am
not sure what caused the problem. Driver details :
C:\WINNT\system32\DRIVERS\CDROM.SYS
C:\WINNT\system32\DRIVERS\REDBOOK.SYS
C:\WINNT\system32\STORPROP.DLL
version no. 5.00.2195.6655
I disconnected each of the CDRW's and then reconnected
them, when Windows 2000 OS started, it shows Disk 3 and 4
as CDROM's. However I am not able to see these in the
Explorer and also when I am inserting the CD, the drives
don't even autoplay.

Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

My guess is you had Roxio installed first. Roxio installs
and starts some services that tend not to ever get
unisntalled unless you manually hack them out. They
interfere with everything after that, including newer
versions of Roxio.
You need to clean Roxio by deleting some services and
files.

And delete the corresponding files. Make sure the files,
when you right-click them, say Adaptec or Roxio. Don't

It's not a good idea to have more than one brand of CD-
burning software on your PC at a time. There are all kinds
of voodoo problems that seem impossible to diagnose and
repair.
Roxio has a user-friendly interface, but it creates tons
of problems, guaranteed.

Sorry my post was so abbreviated. Lots of material and was
short on time...
You need to create a new text file and name it anything as
long as it ends in ".reg". I named mine CDCleanr.reg. Cut
the lines out of my post and paste them into the file,
save, and close. Then double-click the file and answer YES.

This reg file will nuke Adaptec or Roxio where it will
have to be uninstalled/reinstalled in order for it to ever
work again. Only Roxio 5.3 or higher should be running on
Windows 2000, if you decide to reinstall. So if your
version is lower, download the updater from Roxio.

I give fake email because hackers and spammers prowl the
MS newsgroups for email. MS has been doing eveything they
can to stop these guys from running "email harvester"
engines on the newsgroups, but there's only so much MS can
do with a public forum. About 3/4 of my bad email came
from giving my correct email address. So now I'm newsgroup-
only.

No problem I understand. I am beginning to create the
cleaner file. However just wanted to confirm that in the
cleaner statements that you had posted, there are some >
sign and then some of the HKEY is prefixed with a hyphen -
.. Those are syntax right and I can get rid of them ?

In addition to my earlier reply for clarification on
syntax, I still have one more clarification. Please help.
When you mentioned about Upper Filters and Lower filters,
you said that delete the corresponding files. I did not
understand that piece. Do I delete the statements where it
says upper filters and lower filters ? If you can please
clarify which files I need to delete then I can confirm
that they say Adaptec or Roxio before deleting them.

I really appreciate all your help and guidance in this
matter.
