CDRW being recognized as CDROM in Windows

I have a very strange problem with my
CD burner that started about 2-3 weeks ago . It worked fine for
months and now it will read CDs with files (burned or store bought)
but won't recognize a blank CD in Windows Explorer.

The BIOS sees the device at boot up and so does Windows, but it sees
it not as a burner only as a CDROM. In device manager there are no
errors or anything unusual. I have removed and reinstalled the
drivers and device, changed the IDE cable, changed the burner and
recently reinstalled the o/s and I still have the same problem.

The only thing I have on the system now is all the latest Windows
files and service packs for 2000 and Norton. I've been working on
this for days and I just updated the ASPI software and Windows still
does not recognize the device as a burner, but as a CDROM. Although
there were some entries made in the regisrty relating to the
"CD burning", "Drives"..... but still have the same problem.

Any ideas or suggestions would
be greatly appreciated!

Based on the symptoms of this issue, it may be that the CD-RW firmware in
not upto date. Please contact the manufacturer of the CD-RW to obtain the
lastest version of the firmware and check if the issue is resolved.

Also, if you have another CDRW, please install it and check if the
operating system recongizes as a CDRW. If the OS recoginzes this CDRW, then
the problem would be with the CDRW and not the operating system.

Windows 2000 doesn't support Shell-Hardware Detection, like XP does, so it
can't detect a CDRW as a CD-Burner only as a CD-ROM-Drive.
And W2K doesn't have build in CD-Burning-components so it doesn't know what
a blank CD is.

Thats "normal" for W2K
