CDRW and DVDRW

Using a laptop with a built in CDRW. Unable to burn any disc. (No recording tab
despite following all the instructions at MSKB)

Attached a USB DVDRW and it detects my empty CD as 550Mb and unable to burn an
iso. (no recording tab too)

Are there any fixes or do I have to resort to a new installation?

Hmm... Start > run > "services.msc" without the quotes > enter > is IMAPI
CD-Burning COM service set to manual? Do you have a third party burning
application installed that's taken over? Have you tried killing upperfilters
and lowerfilters (oddly seems to fix all sorts of crazy errors) and removing
the devices from the device manager and rebooting and letting XP install
them fresh? I don't know what KB articles you've read so I don't know what
you've tried already.

have tried changing the registry from 1 to 2

have removed the device and reboot and allow OS detect

have checked upperfilters and lowerfilters

Have you tried killing upperfilters
> and lowerfilters (oddly seems to fix all sorts of crazy errors)

How do I try killing the above?

Thanks

Missing CD/DVD Drives:
http://kgiii.info/windows/XP/general...VD_drives.html

There's an automated tool and the manual method listed there.

If it has no upperfilters and lowerfilters entries then, well, I have NO
idea what to tell you other than to suggest a repair installation of XP.
I've seen some odd things but I can't think of ever having seen those
missing.

Well, we can try. <g>

Starting here:

From a link on that page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316529/

Try changing the value to "2" and see if that does the trick?
