CDRW & DVD both eject discs and will not read

Both my optical drives have developed the same behaviour about three weeks
ago. Put CD in, light on front flashes, short hard drive activity, cd
appears to spin up to speed (briefly), then the tray ejects and (sometimes) I
get a screen message saying pls put a cd in drive x:

I suspect this is a software or OS glitch somewhere - as both drives behave
identically. One is Liteon DVD ltd 163 (drive F

, other is Mitsumi
cr-48xcte (drive g

. All OS status checks show devices working properly.

Has anyone any suggestions?
