CDR/DVD drive intermittently wont recognise CDs

Have got new laptop configuring with Win XP home. In-
built CDRW/DVD drive has a hit and miss performance re
reading CDs whether audio, data - commercially bought or
home produced. XP's device manager shows the drive as
having no problems, no conflicts.
