cdr drive not working

i have a sony vaio computer, one year old, and my cdr
drive wont work all of a sudden. it'll play cds like a
regular drive, but when i try to burn anything, it wont do
it. i thought it might be the program i'm using
(sonicstage) but then i tried to use realplayer and media
player and nothing will work. is there an updated driver
i'm missing? what does this sound like to yall?
