There was an easy solution before you formatted.
If your computer is OEM, the Product Key should be on a 1" x 3"
sticker affixed to the computer.
If Windows XP is retail, look for the orange sticker on the back of
the case the CD came.
Otherwise contact Microsoft if Windows XP is retail:

If Windows XP is OEM, contact the seller, Microsoft can not help.
