I am trying to copy photos to my CD, as I have done many times before
without problem. Now, when it is time to write the temporary file to
the CD, my CD won't do it. I push the button to write and nothing
happens. As a matter of fact if I hit the button below it to erase
the CD, nothing happens. Any help out there?

I am currently using a Dell with Windows XP. Optiarc ND35-70A DVD-CD R

It seems to be able to read other CDs. It just won't let me do
anything when it comes time to write or erase.

I'm curious, is your drive a dual drive (CD/DVD)?

I'm having a similar problem. My dual drive can read CD & DVD and
write DVD but it cannot write/burn to a CD. I can also copy from the
CD. It used to be able to do it all then all of a sudden nada on the
CD burn.

I also have a DELL with a HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4168B drive.

My thoughts are it is time to buy a quality drive.

How old is the drive. It could simply be dying.

I don't think it's uncommon for a drive to stop writing but still be able to
read disks, though usually it may have trouble reading some disks. So it
might read pressed disks better than burned ones.

I think I still have an "emergency" CD writer around that does this.

This Dell is only slightly older than a year old. Yes it is a combo.
The funny thing is that I used to have the same problem with my old
HP, but I don't anymore (it now seems more reliable). I got on HP
support and they manage to handle it for me. I can't remember exactly
what they did (lots of things) but I think I uninstalled then
reinstalled that driver. I tried that again with my Dell. Still no
much luck.

Sounds like there might be some software conflict.

Have you tried using a third party piece of software like Nero. There are a
couple of freeware writing programs around.

My now crippled writer was about 18 months old at the time it stopped
functioning properly. A cheap brand so I wasn't too surprised.

I've just had a similar problem - I cured it about ten minutes ago by
going to My Computer, right click the cd drive, click on Properties,
then click the Recording tab. In my case, all I had to do was check
the box next to 'Enable CD recording on this drive' and as they say in
Viz - Hey Presto! My CD will burn again!
