CD writer writing and slower speed

I have a Lite on 40125S and it used to write at 40x. Now it seems to
write at 24x and I get finalization errors. I have had it since last
July, and have yet to clean the lens. Could this be the reason it is
writing at a slower speed even if the medium is 48x?
