My CD Writer drive has decided to refuse to see any disc I put in it!
Yesterday it was working ok, today it's not.
Haven't turned the computer off since yesterday, haven't installed anything
etc etc

When I put an audio CD in it just spins and never seems to see it to start
playing it.
When I put a DVD in the same thing.
When I try to write a disc the tray opens I put in a blank and it just keeps
spinning but nothing happens.

Any ideas?

Sometimes things just break without warning.

CD repair for XP:
http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip

Also try the following. You should back up the registry before making
changes:

Click Start, Run, type Regedit, click OK.
Locate this Registry Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the
data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot

Hello FD

If you haven't restarted the computer, then restart it.
If the drive still isn't recognized, go to Devive Manager (Start =>
Run and type in "devmgmt.msc" {without the quotes}).
Locate the drive, right-click on it and select 'Uninstall'.
Restart Windows. It will re-install the driver.

If that doesn't work, go here and download Doug Knox's CD drive fix:

See whether you are able boot to Windows XP Installation CD in BIOS.You may
have to change the Boot sequence settings of BIOS to be able to boot from
the CD.

I tried all the suggestions posted below, but none worked.
I then tried a restore op, it didn't work.
I then booted with it plugged in to a USB port to try using it as an
external drive, that didn't work.
When I put it back in on the IDE2 cable where it used to be and booted up
again, it now works!
Thanks to everyone for your help.

1. Post goes down HERE.

2. Please reply to your existing thread. Now you've started a new
thread, which can quickly divest into a different discussion, etc.

3. Better yet, learn how to use your newsreader to avoid this problem
in the first place.

You might consider that the poster is new to all this and explain why. Oh I
forget newsnet nazis don't need to explain themselves.

The fact that your newsreader is broken doesn't mean everyone else's is. I
might not use the best newsreader, but it does show the thread as
contiguous.

I doubt that it's a problem to everyone else, so why should the poster
change the way he uses his newsreader just because you have a broken or
rubbish newreader?
