Turning on my computer I have found that it continuously restarts. The XP
screen appears, then restarts, the windows log on does not come up.

Which sounds like exactly my problem.

I am currently running SP2. I booted up from my original windows CD and
followed the recovery console instructions. However when at the prompt:

C:\>

when i enter "cd system32" as the article instructs it tells me that "the
path or file specified is not valid.

Have also tried "C:\> CD WINDOWS\system32" - Same message.

Can anyone offer any advice as to a) be able to successfully repair the
possibly damaged Kernel32.dll file and b) boot up successfully.

yikes...can you do a repair install of Windows? Insert Windows CD and choose
Load Windows(don't choose Repair Windows), then you can choose repair Windows
at the next screen. I just came here to have a look but I can't escape...

i dont want to loose any data or programmes.

i am also running sp2 so that would mean a reinstall of that too.

do you know if there is another way to access the kernel32.dll file?

I'm just guessing...have you tried leaving the Windows CD in the drive when
you start the computer? A repair doesn't remove programs or change settings.
You have an XP SP1 installation CD? Even so I'm sure no programs get
uninstalled. Be sure to Defragment when repaired and DiskClean.
Wait for confirmation of what I have written here before you try to
Repair...I have done a few repair installations at home.
I had a similar situation recently. The computer would not boot at
all...it's not quite the same situation as yours but worse probably.
I used the harddrive manufacturers harddrive software and totally wiped
the harddrive...that took 9 hours but will have been completely
thorough...then what I think it does is replace all the drivers that come in
the harddrive. This free software even copies your old harddrive and if you
replace the harddrive with the same model new it will load all your old stuff
onto the new harddrive.
It loaded those files Windows said it could not find and reformatted the
harddrive. I think that makes the harddrive like it was when it was first
used.
Computer seems to be going faster now. I think harddrives accumulate real
junk after a while and this is how to recover them as best they can be
recovered.
I have a seagate harddrive.
If you see the message "file missing" in Windows you can RUN sfc /scannow
and Windows will check the whole file system, then if theres any missing you
insert the Windows CD and the files are installed.

....yes, that command you have written will be the correct command.
I was suggesting hollyp use the sfc /scannow in RUN if she gets into the
operating system again. Bit of a dumb suggestion by me...
