cd-rw files waiting to be written message

I recently wrote some files from my laptop to its cd-rw.
I assumed they had completed copying not long after I had
clicked paste. I took the cd to the office to copy to the
main machine and the files were not on the cd. Now I am
getting a persistent balloon message on the laptop which
says "You have files waiting to be wtitten to the cd"
and "Click here to see the files". When I click the
balloon it asks me to put a cd in the drive. When I put a
cd in it shows the files on the cd in "Exlorer". Nothing
happens automatiacally after that and there appears to be
no way of finishing off the write operation. How do I get
rid of the persistent balloon?
