I am installing a Memorex cd-rw drive in my Dell Dimension 2400 computer. It
originally had a Sony cd-rw drive. Will XP detect this new drive at start up
and install the software for it?

Both are / will be using the standard Microsoft drivers. However, XP
normally can only use this drive as a CD-R. For the RW features, you
must install a third party software system, like Nero or Roxio.
However, several of these drives could with a bundled OEM version on
one or the other. Since these are OEM, they are not inter-changeable,
so the Sony bundled software may not work with the Memorex drive, and
vice-versa.

Why? XP will access every other multiwrite CD or DVD drive as a CD-RW
natively.
