My cd rw drive doesn't acknowledge any cds I put into it. It was as if I put nothing in it. The device manager says the device is working properly. I uninstalled and reinstalled it but it doesn't make a difference. Is there anything I can do?

If the drive is getting old and you've used it quite a lot, and if the CD
itself (or CDs) are clean, then replace the drive.

You could try a CD cleaning kit in case the lens on the drive have become
dirty, but generally they cost almost as much as a new drive these days. I
got a 52x24x52 drive last year for the grand sum of $27.

Then I dumped it (put it in hubby's PC) when I got a DVD +/- burner (Pioneer
A06) for the grand sum of $106.

Seems there is a problem with recognition/autostart. See
article 817357. The patch is not downloadable though.
Are there other solutions? I think there is a service
conflict. Anyone have the patch? ChrisD

Had a long chat with MS support this afternoon))

It seems the answer to the problem is not the patch!

Well at least my problem was'nt. It was one of the
drivers in the startup group, the one for a Belkin Flash
Drive. As soon as we disabled the driver the CD drive
started working properly:-))))

If needed, go to Start, Run, msconfig and then the tab
for startup. From there disable all the drivers and do a
reboot, check the drive, enable a driver, reboot etc
routine to find the one thats causing the problem.

Phil Martin.

Thanks for the feedback. I have suspected a conflict and
have identified that if I disable the ethernet connection
then all is fine. As my system is largely 'vanilla' I
tend to think this might respond well with a patch, but
will try sytematically stopping services and see what
happens.
