CD-RW and CD ROM trouble

After a lightning-induced power blink, my computer
restarted to the blue screen of death, noting that a
driver was not working and may cause the system to be
unstable. I rebooted the computer a few times and finally
it booted. My system did not recognize either CD rom
drives (E and F, a CDR and CD rom). The E drive didn't
power up, the F drive did, and open, but wasn't
recognized. I have replaced each drive with other drives
that work, and still the system doesn't recognize them.
In Device manager under ATAPI drives, there are
two "unknown devices." When I get through the wizard to
find the drivers for the devices, and click NEXT to
install them, my system reboots itself. It's done it 6
times.

Help??! Thank you!!

Since repairing the software does not work, hardware failure is the most
likely source of the trouble. IMO you probably have a motherboard fault. So
take the machine to a competent technician who can diagnose the trouble, and
if necessary install a new mother board (which in itself is not a simple
process, unfortunately, as W2K objects strenuously to being "moved to new
hardware.") Staples is good, but a small local shop may be better -- ask
around.
