cd rom stops working when swiching users

I'm running XPhome and have 5 users IDs set up (each family member). If I
boot
up and log in as anyone, I can use the cd rom drive. If I switch users,
then the cd rom drive become inaccessible. Explorer can still see that
there is a "D" drive, but I cannot switch to it. I get no error messages,
it just will do nothing if I double click on the D drive.

If I boot the machine again and go back in then I can see the D drive (until
I then switch users again).

Any help will be appreciated.
