Maybe you should try un-installing and then re-installing. Remove it from
Device Manager, power down and pull the power lead off the CD-ROM. Boot up
with the CD-ROM removed from Windows.
Power down a second time and reconnect the power. Boot up and let XP
re-detect the drive. With luck it may work again or, if not, your CD-ROM may
be dead.
Power down again and connect the power again
