I just recently did a re-install of Windows XP Pro. Now one of my cd-rom
drives is not recognized. It worked prior to the re-install. I tried the
windows support by altering the registry editor with no luck. All help
appreciated........

I have problems with my cd rom as well.
When i first install every thing the cd runs fine. then after some days in the device manager the cd looses its dma mode xp puts the cd in pio mode (which is not good for playing music causes stuttering, skipping) eventually my comp slows down a great deal because it is trying to initialize the cd, or auto run the cd. when it is doing this i cant even view what is on the cd in windows explorer.
If any one has an idea that would be great.
PS I have sound blaster extigy. and have installed the fix for auto incertion for disk detector.

>I, too, have had problems with BOTH my DVD and CD/R drives

since I installed XP Pro. They show up in the device
manager and are "working properly", but the CDR doesn't
recognize the format of any disc I insert, and the DVD
drive keeps telling me to insert a disk (which I, of
course, have already done). I just wanted to get in on
this thread in case someone out there knows how to fix the
problem.

Don't have a sure fix for both problems here, but for the
cd not recognized in the drive...try putting any valid disc
in and then reboot... if that works (and it appears to on
my daughter's xp pro machine), just always leave a disc in
the drive(s). I have not seen a MS fix for this problem.

you can try an F5 or ctl-F5, but I'm not sure they work
for this problem.
