I recently installed Windows XP on one of my hard drives
and the cd-rom/dvd-rom player dose not work. It worked
fine in Windows 98 but can't read anything under XP. The
driver seems to be working fine and I actually installed
XP with that drive. I am befuddled. The drive is
recognized as the correct drive Toshiba SD-M1212 and when
I have a cd-rom in the drive it recognizes the disk as a
cd-rom but I can't view the contents. The erro I get is
an I/O device error. Any suggestions?

You could also try a firmware upgrade from the
manufacturer of the cd-rom
