I have a CDROM and a CDRW (Pioneer & Plextor) when I put a
CD (whatever you can think about, audio, or data) in either
of the drives, it is not recognized, that there is a CD in
them.
When I reboot the machine, the CD's are recognized and
everything is normal.

OS: Win2k SP4. Any suggestions?

At what point are disks not recognized? Is it after you have successfully
"read" a disk and subsequent disks are not recognized? Do you have the
problem in Safe Mode? What CD burning program do you have installed?

>I have a similar problem which may help pinpoint the

problem...If I boot the computer with no media in the CDRW
drive, explorer will not recognize any regular data or udf
packet-written data (I use InCD). Clicking on "explore"
gets you a "Please insert media into drive E" flag. It
will however recognize a music CD, which I suspect is
because the media player installed has its own media
detector routine.
On the other hand, if there is media (any media - even a
blank disk) in the drive at boot up, there are no problems.
I can subsequently change different kinds of media in and
out of the drive all day long, and InCD or explorer,
whichever is doing the detecting, recognizes the correct
type of media and reads it.

Kevin,
It is exactly like Tonyb said: no CD (whatever type) in
the CD rom during boot is a "sin". Booting with a CD in
there is good, because then it works - Oh this Microsoft.

I have a win2k machine that is doing the same thing exactly. Onl
recognizes cd rom if media is in machine during re-boot.

Has any one gone to microsoft with it?

I'm having the exact same problem. Did you ever find a
solution?
