Hi,

My Cd Rom is not reading the Data Disc. Rest all the Audio and Video
cds it reads properly.

Even in the device manager it says the device is working properly.

But when i insert a data disc it shows it as blank disc.

Some of my friends are also facing the same problem.

So may be some windows update has caused this.

Kindly check and lets me know thw possible solution ASAP.

That's not very likely. Otherwise, this problem would have been reported
in these groups and all of my fully patched systems should have the same
problems which is *not* the case.

Most likely a hardware issue. CDROM drives are low-cost items, so why
don't you simply replace that drive in order to save valuable time.

I purcahsed a new laptop LENOVO Y500 Series some 9 months back. and
intiallt i.e till last month the device was working properly. It is
juct now that its not reading teh data disc.

If it would have been a hardware fault then it would have not read
audio n video cds which it is reading.

And the fact is that many of my friends are also facing the same
issue.

Cd rom suddenly stopped reading teh data disc Cds.

So the reason can be that either some update has caused this or some
other problem. Rest like Hardware is faulty is not correct.

This doesn't mean at all that the hardware cannot fail.

Nope. CDROM drives *often* show an odd behavior prior to going south.

The first CDROM drives (1x and 2x) were long-lasting - todays drives
(54x) aren't. This is especially true when there are (heavy) smokers
around, not kidding.

Ok, good luck.

Hey thanks for your valuable comments.

But the thing is that many of my friends are also facing the similar
problem.

Now my drive can be faulty but suddenly everyones drive stops reading
data disc is not possible.

So you cannot ignore the fact that others are also facing similar
issue with there DVD drives.

That is why i am saying so confidently that it cannot be hardware
fault.

But thanks for your help and valuable time.

Go to device manager and uninstall the device. Reboot and let windows
reinstall your device.

You haven't told us:
1. Whether it's the SAME data disk that cannot be read by you and your
friends, and
2. Whether ANY data disks can be read by you and your friends.

A third question, although remote, is whether you and your friends have the
same malware infestation.

Device manager has no idea if your device is working properly, it merely
read a chip on the device.
