Are the drives stiill recognized during BIOS start up? (That is, is the
hardware still running properly?)
(I'm not familiar with Gateway 2000 machines. Some appliance PC makers don't
display much information in the BIOS settings; I hope that Gateway is not
like that.)

(You can get this problem without installing XP as an upograde over an older
OS. I think that a Roxio Easy CD Creator update can do it.)
If you don't care to manually edit the Registry, try a patch:

Nearly all removable-media drives on the IDE controllers use Windows
drivers; looking for drivers from the manuafacturer is probably a waste of
time. (Most manufacturers seem to not even provide real-mode DOS drivers any
more.)
