cd rom lost

sony vaio running winxp. did total system restore. my computer was running like new. everything worked. downloaded microsoft up dates, and xp undates and lost my cd rom. in device manager my dvd rom shows up but not the cd rom. but now, my dvd rom will not open. tried dougknox.com web site cd-dvd fix and it didn't bring back the cd rom. help please.
