I HAVE A CD ROM VERSION OF LEMMINGS, IT SAYS THE ONLY SYSTEM REQUIREMENT IS
WINDOWS WHEN I PUT IT IN A PROGRAM MANAGER FILE COMES UP AND SAYS THE CD ROM
HAS MIXED CONTENT WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE WINDOWS TO DO WITH IT.... THE OPTIONS
ARE THINGS LIKE OPEN IT USING WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER, VIEW CONTENT USING SLIDE
SHOW, OPEN WITH WINDOWS TO VIEW CONTENT AS FILES. THEN I CAN VIEW FILES IE
TROUBLESHOOTING , LEVELS SOUND ETC BUT I CANNOT ACTUALLY PLAY THE GAME, IS
THERE A PROGRAM I NEED ON MY COMPUTER TO ENABLE ME TO RUN THESE TYPE OF CD

Please disengage your caps-lock key when posting. Its hard to read and
is considered shouting (rude).

Hold down the left shift key when you close the drive tray (hold until
the CD activity light goes out). Install software (CD or Floppy) on a
Windows OS by useing the "Add/Remove Programs" applet on the Windows XP
control panel. Most applications are installed by a "install.exe" or
"setup.exe" file on the first disk.

Many games aren't designed to automaticly run when the media is inserted
in the drive. If the files neccesary for that feature aren't included by
the publisher there really isn't much you can do other than hold the
left shift key when inserting the CD (hold until the CD activity light
goes out), then click on a shortcut to start the application.

hi robertva, thanks for the advice about caps lock i was unaware and was
meaning to be rude!!!! thankyou as well for your post i did try it but it
never worked it never got the computer off of the home screen and there was
certainly no option to install any software but thanks for your help
anyway... if anyone has any other ideas ...my ears are open??????????????????

Click on the option: "open with windows to view content as files". This
will open an explorer window. Now look for a file named install.exe or
setup.exe and click on it. That should get you going for the install.

hi thomas, i know what you talking about as i done that by accident and it
comes up with an error message saying that it is a read only disc and windows
cannoy do it asking if i want to retry any ideas?

It's to late to press the left shift key by the time that box appears.
You need to press the left shift key before the CD drawer closes all the
way and hold it until the light on the CD drive showing drive activity
goes out. The box that asks you what you want Windows to do with the CD
is part of the Autoplay process, which the left shift key should
overide. If the pop-up does appear, just click the cancel button or the
"Close" X at the right end of the title bar. Either way, use the Control
Panel's "Add or Remove Programs" applet to install software. The "Add or
Remove Programs" applet will usually find the installation file on
floppys or CD-ROMs automaticly.

Look for the "Control Panel" in the second column of the menu that
appears when you click the "Start" button on your Windows XP taskbar.
The "Add or Remove Programs" applet should appear near the top of the
window that opens when you click the "Control Panel" link. Once the "Add
or Remove Programs" window opens, click the "Add New Programs" link on
the left side of the window then click the "CD or Floppy" button that
appears near the right edge of the window.

Now that _is_ puzzling: Windows can't mean your CD as it is obviously
'read only'. One possibility is, that the game is actually installed
already! You said that the only requirement is Windows, do you know
which version it is written for, eg 98, 2000, XP?
Open your _Windows_ Explorer and have a look if you can find a directory
that sounds as if it has something in its name like lemmings or the
publishers name. It might either be in the root or the 'program files'
directory.
Another way around the problem might be to copy the whole CD onto your
hard drive: create a new directory in your root - click on 'My
Computer', click on C:, click on 'File', 'New', 'Folder'. Rename the
folder 'Install' by right clicking it and choose 'rename'. Now go to
'Start', 'Run' and enter the following command: xcopy d:\*.* /s
c:\install . Please substitute d: with the correct drive letter of your
CD drive if necessary.
Should this all have worked (cross fingers) proceed as follows with a
compatibility installation:
Search the folder c:\install for a file like install.exe or setup.exe
and right click it. Choose properties. Click on Compatibility. Tick mark
the compatibility mode and choose the OS that is applicable (most likely
Windows 98). Click Apply. Click OK.
Now double click the file that you have just modified, eg
c:\install\install.exe.
And don't forget to come back when you are done.

PS. If the installation worked, you will have to do the same
compatibility procedure for the executive file of the game, eg
c:\lemmings\lemmings.exe
