CD-rom failure

I have lost the ability to use my CD-rom. It appears in
the exporer but will not recognise a disc. It keeps
telling me to insert disc, even though a disc is inserted
into the drive. It refuses to recognise both Data and
music CD's.
We have had two other PC's lose the CD-rom in the last few
days and this leads me to believe that it is not a
hardware failure.
