I was trying to reinstall cd rom software from the manufacturer because a cd
writer was not working. In the midst of this attempt the computer froze and I
had to reboot by turning off the power to the computer.
Now the device manager recognizes both the dvd rom and the cd writer and say
they are working but they do not show up in the my computer / windows
explorer window. also a cd inserted into either drive does not show up.
any advice would be helpful. thanks
mm

Do you see them in Disk Management? Can you assign drive letters? No bangs
or errors in Device Manager? This article may also help.

I do not see them in Disk Management. I cannot assign drive letters to these
devices.
I don't know what a "bang" is but device manager says they are working
properly and I do not see any error messages about them in device manager.
thanks

Your registry is probably corrupt but try the fix in the KB article anyway.

Thanks, I did try the fix and I was able to restore the drives. It turned out
that the OEM software from the CD manufacturer was causing the problem when I
was trying to re-install it. I was working on this over the holidays and when
I was able to get to a tech rep, he advised me of newer software. I
appreciate the assistance.
