CD-Rom Driver Problems...any ideas?

Running Windows XP Home. My internal CD-Rom stopped working after months of
no problems. I figured the drive itself was busted (foolish), so I bought a
new one. The new one had the same problem, which I now realize is a driver
issue.

In the device manager for BOTH drives (the old and new), I get the yellow
exclamatin point with the note "Windows cannot load the device driver for
this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)." I have
tried uninstalling the driver and scanning for new hardware. It recognizes
the drive, but then gives an error message saying that the "new" device
couldn't be installed because the driver couldn't be found.

I've tried creating a new user profile...didn't help.

Ideas?

Check the manufacturers Web site for XP compatible drivers. You might also
find them at Windows Update.

Curious, because the same thing just happened to me on 12/27 ... both my
cd-rom and DVD-RW drives came up with this error 39. The standard
uninstall/reinstall troubleshooting did not work. I had just downloaded
an updated usb driver from Microsoft update and updated open office to
2.01 and figured one of those may have unsettled something, so I did a
system restore to a restore point earlier in the day, and they are both
working again.
