CD-ROM drive "inaccessible"

This message appeared unexpectedly:
"D:/is not accessible, Incorrect function."
This is the CD-ROM drive.
No disk can be read in Windows Home XP. I have removed
the drive and rebooted and the drive was recognized and
Windows reinstalled the drivers and the message persists.
I can boot to the D:/ drive and a diagnostics CD is read
but the drive does not read in Windows.
Can someone tell me what to do?

(1) does the drive show in your hardware configuration and
are there any errors listed there?
(2) does the drive show up in your list of devices in
explorer? If yes, insert a valid data disc and reboot and
see if it can read it now...
