CD-ROM disappears after leaving standby

My problem is that after I leave standby mode sometimes,
my CD-ROM mysteriously disappears. There are no traces of
it in My Computer or Device Manager. To only fix is to
restart, something I am trying to prevent doing. What can
I do?
