I have an older (circa 1997) cd-rom changer, the 4 slot
NEC Multispin 4X4 (NEC CD-ROM DRIVE:251), which I
installed in a new XP Pro system. It is jumpered for
Cable Select and cabled in the master position on the
secondary IDE channel, with a DVD+RW drive cabled in the
slave position. The drive, which is on the HCL, is
detected and media in slot 1 is accessible. However,
media in slots 2-4 is not recognized. The only MSKB
article I found relevant to the issue is Q227425
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;q227425); though it is written for Win2K, I believe it
also applies to XP. But the command

RSM VIEW /tchanger

does not return a device friendly name, so I suspect XP
sees the drive as only a cdrom, not a changer. Device
Manager shows the following properties for the drive:

Device type: DVD/CD-ROM drives
Manufacturer: Atapi 2.5 Changer Devices

Additionally, the Removable Storage service is Started,
and MSINFO32 shows both cdrom.sys and changer.sys as
loaded drivers. Because apparently RSM does not
recognize the drive as a changer, Computer
Management\Removable Storage\Media shows only the disc in
slot 1 (and the disc in the DVD+RW drive).
Interestingly, though, the command RSM VIEW /tdrive shows

DRIVE 0
DRIVE 0
DRIVE 0

and adding the /guiddisplay switch shows each with a
different GUID. RSM VIEW /tlibrary /guiddisplay shows
the NEC drive twice (with 2 different GUIDs) and the
Philips DVD+RW once. None of this changes whether there
are discs in any or all of the slots.

Can anyone shed any light on this problem? Does XP
handle changers differently from 2K?
Why does this changer not function as a changer in XP
even though it is on the HCL, and worked fine in a Win98
system?

Did you ever solve the Nec changer problem? I have saved a Multispin
which I loved, and would like to use it with XP or 2000.
