CD-ROM ATAPI incompatible

My CD-ROM will not recognize any CD (audio or data). I
unplugged and replugged it, turned on the computer, and
then it worked fine. When I restarted the computer the
next time, the drive wouldn't recognize any CD again. I
unplugged and replugged again, but when I turned on the
computer, an error message appeared during start-up saying
that my CD-ROM drive was "ATAPI incompatible". I've had
this problem ever since.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
