I've been given a Liteon LTR-48246s rewriter that reads CR-R disks very
slowly even the ones it writes itself. It reads master disks more quickly.

Running the speed test that came with it I get the following results:

Tiscali Internet disk 20.0x
MS Office 97 disk 7.1x
Liteon R/W disk 0.5x
Infiniti CD-OR disk < 0.1x (takes over 2 hours to verify 80Mb)

Any ideas what is going wrong?

JKS

The drive is either dying or maybe just dirty. It can read the factory made CDs better because they are more reflective. Open up the drive and clean the laser lens. Try a different brand of media.

Every once in a while a video DVD disc reads very slowly. I clean it
with Brasso and it still reads slowly - like 2x. The next disc from
the same series reads 16x - without cleaning.

Go figure.
