CD-R won't write

I have an HP PC, XP Home SP1, with a Lite-on CD-R/RW burner and a recently
added SONY DVD/CD burner (both internal).

I tried to add files to a data CD-R today that I had previously burned, and
the Wizard does not recognize that there is a writeable CD-R in the slot.
This happens with both burners. I insert one and click NEXT and nothing
happens.

I tried using NERO SE and NERO Express too and they also tell me there is no
CD in there when I try to burn (the NERO was bundled with, and only
recognizes the SONY).

I tried substituting a blank CD-R and it still keeps telling me there is
none in either of the burner(s).

There is no problem with the reading of CD data, just burning. What to do?

Thanks, Pflu

Can happen if someone has tried using "InCD" on the disk.
Were you absolutely sure no-one has ever tried using that blank CD?

I got the NERO to burn (I had to figure out how to pick CD-R modes). That
was on the DVD/CDRW drive E:

But not the CDRW drive D: -- I tried several blank disks that could not have
been touched by InCD and it continues to read "There is no disk in the
drive. Please insert...)

I have an InCD tab in the D: Properties but I didn't use it.

CDRW reads OK but won't let me add folders and there is only 1.24MB on the
disk. When I try to open D: without a disk in, it says I cannot access it.
It worked OK recently.

Thanks, Pflu

Obviously when the 1,24MB was burnt onto it,it wasn't ticked to be
multi-session? In other words "left open" for further writing. If it has
been "closed" then I'm afraid it is "all over" for that disk.
Another reason might be that Even though you have NERO on your computer,
there is also a similar program called "Roxio" on your computer that comes
included in Windows XP. If you drag & drop files onto that drives letter in
My Comp, & then see the "balloon" say "you have files waiting to be burnt on
this drive" & tell it to burn them, then XP uses Roxio to do it. Then if you
want extra files on the disk with Nero it won't work.
So................ try just dropping extras onto it & see if it was Roxio
that was used last time?

Personally I would like to see XP detect Nero & disable Roxio when it finds
it.
Can only be BAD to have 2 progs fighting on one comp?

Is it possible to configure it to do that? I need the Nero for the SONY
DVD/CDRW, and it won't work the Lite-on drive, so I also need the Roxio.

I can't drop anything to it. But the "waiting to write" bubble shows and the
D: window has both the files that are on the disk and the ones to be written
above, as is normal --but it cannot see that any disk is in the drive, even
a blank one.

It is Fatal to try to use Roxio & Nero on one computer. They both install
their own dlls
etc. You are bound to have problems, with one or the other.
I would Uninstall both, then install your favourite, after restarting the
computer of course.

How can he or even you uninstall the Roxio component when it is built into
Windows XP?

I suspect the laser is kaput or dirty or even mis-aligned in that burner.
If under warranty then return it or else trash it.
Do you have access to another computer to try it in? If it does (or doesn't
do!) the same then you'll know it's the drive.
Make sure you try a brand new GOOD brand of disk for the trial.

I'm glad that part is so easy. Since I might need to use both Roxio and Nero
because each is dedicated to its own drive, what would be the best way to
"toggle" between them?

I ask this because Nero is a huge application with many parts. It would be
nice not to have to uninstall the whole thing if I want to use the Roxio.

If I had to choose between the two it would have to be the Nero because it
also does the DVD -- but that would leave me with a useless CDRW on D:

What would you suggest?

Thanks, Pflu
