I updated Roxie easy cd creator and some windows updates on the same day. After the updates, the NEC 7900a cd r/w tries to read every 2 minutes while there is no cd in the drive and while I am working in a program. I have removed easy cd, uninst~~~ed the driver, updated the driver and firmware, and fin~~~y used selective start up in MSCONFIG. I use the minimal start up item to boot up the system and the problem is still there. The only way to get the CD r/w drive to stop trying to read is to disable the driver. and then I can't use the CD r/w. The Dell techs took 4 hours passing me around to other techs that can't seem to help. Any help with out reinst~~~ings Window XP would be greatly appreciated. I have Dell 8200 w/factory inst~~~ed XP.
Thanks Cat

Try uninstalling Roxio, Power down, disconnect the CD/RW inside the machine (power and data cable), reboot into XP, let it settle down. Power down, reconnect the CD/RW. Reboot. Check to see if CD still tries to read every 2 minutes. Reinstall Roxio.

I did exactly what you said. For over 1 hour the cd r/w did not try to read, now it is back again. I don't understand why it was gone for so long and then came back. Thank you for any additional help.

What applications are you running. It sounds to me like you have
something on your system that is trying to access the CD ROM where it
last saved to or pulled from. Programs that do this include many office
suites, picture viewers, music applications such as WinAmp, especially
disk utilities or virus/malware scanners, and anything else that
accesses the CD ROM. It may just be Roxio and you need to switch over
to something different. Try uninstalling Roxio and leaving it
uninstalled and see if the problem still exists
