I'm getting ready to purchase a Canon i860 and am wondering it anyone
has tried using the CD/DVD printing tray from the i865 with the i860.
The printers look identical and I'm wondering if I can use this tray
with the i860. I have family in Australia, so getting the parts is
not a problem. I just hate to go through the hassle if they won't
work with the i860.

Can't say for sure but when I look inside my i860 I can see two clip like
plastic tabs that don't seem to do anything. My guess is that they made one
mold for both the I860 and the i865. I would need to know how the cd
adapter snaps in place...I'll see if the i865 user manual is on the UK site
to see how this cd holder attaches...................UK Canon does not have
online user manual available...I went to the Australia Canon site and
searched for manuals for the i865 and I did not see the i860 as a printer
available in (let alone parts) Australia....I could be wrong
though.....maybe someone else can let you know

I think that you will find that the manufacture of the i860 is
restrained because of the civil law as it affects America and that the
i865, which is the European version of the i860, has the extra
components because the civil laws in this area permits it.

It follows that someone in America who purchases the i865 from Europe
will get the extra facilities and that someone from Europe who purchases
the i860 from America will get the basic printer. Hope I am right for
the sake of peace and tranquillity.

In short, I don't think that you can buy an i860 and convert it into an
i865.

Regards,
Emrys Davies.

Does anyone know a reference to this "Civil Law". I keep hearing about it,
or some sort of patent problem, but I've never seen one shred of evidence in
print anywhere.

I'd love to know who is stiffling innovation in the US.

Hmmm.... Not really. All it says is:

"The CD-R/DVD printing option is not available on the i860 printer (US
market), this is a Patents issue and beyond Canon's control."

What I want to know is exactly who is hosing us ?

Not available in where i860 is sold

Maybe, you will have to try to get the CD tray, and then try to make
the i860 work with it.
