CD player won't play music CD

User has a Dell 4600 running XP Pro w/SP2. Recently it stopped playing audio
CDs. Reloaded driver, replaced CD drive with another new one from Dell.
Still, won't play audio. Plays games and otherwise executes CDs and i do get
sound for other things, though.
windows media player and real player give me a message that says it doesn't
recognize the media type. it's an off-the-shelf cd, not one that was burned

Not sure where else to turn. Any ideas?
