What should I check to see why XP is not able to recognise the drive?

Below are the details.

------

I run XP Pro. When I click my CD player in Windows Explorer (the Z
drive) I get this message:

Z:\ is not accessible
Incorrect function

Also I can not get Properties for the CD player.

I have checked to see if the BIOS is picking up the CD player (and
recorder). That seems ok.

What should I check to see why XP is not able to recognise the drive?

Andy

PS: I vaguely recall that I may (or may not) have disabled some XP
function or another to do with CDs on my PC.

Look in Device Manager and see if it is correctly recognized there, no
error messages.
