compaq presario 1300nx AMD 2000

drive is recognized in BIOS. Recognized in startup dialog.

Device manager indicates problem. I tried uninstall and then install. Msg is that windows has loaded drivers but can't find device.
I have changed cables which didn't help. It was working find 5 hours ago. Light blinks, disk spins. Is this a problem anyone has had with XP?

All thoughts will be appreciated.

It is not a year old yet but I have a feeling I might as well get a new one.
