I don't know if this is the correct forum for this question but...

I am trying to reformat a computer I've had for approx. 4 years now. I
cannot find the CD Key for the XP CD that I have to reinstall the OS. I've
tried to use the CD Key that's on the side of the box, but I'm getting an
invalid CD Key when I click "OK". I think I know what the problem might be, I
now need a solution. I got divorced a couple of years ago, my ex-wife and I
each had a computer. When we each went our own ways, she took a
computer/software, I took a computer/software. I think we might of mixxed up
the software in the split. I know, I know, simple solution is to go to her
and ask for the correct software, and give her her software back. NOT GOIN TO
WORK! We don't talk, and haven't seen each other in months.

Is there anyone who might have a suggestion, I've got legitimate software,
and a legitimate computer. They just don't match.

I'm praying someone will ahve the answer I need. Thanks in advance to anyone
who is willing to help me out.

If you haven't formatted your disk yet then this product will tell you the
various product keys: http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml. If
you have already formatted it then you probably have three options:
- Talk to your wife.
- Talk to Microsoft and back up your claim with a receipt.
- Buy a new Windows XP CD.

there is a freeware called
siw.

it will give you keys and
passwords, etc.

however, keep in mind
that if the software you
are trying to install with
that cd has already been
activated on a different pc,

you will encounter a
problem.

What version does the sticker say it's for, home or pro? What does your CD
say, home or pro? What type of package is your CD in. pretty blue or green
box or flimsy piece of cardboard?

XP Pro, and the CD came in a plain white paper sleeve as pasrt of a package
of all the software that came with this computer. These computers were used
in a business that my ex-wife and I had together.

Thanks all for your suggestions. After reading farids suggestion I
thought...why didn't I think of that. Thanks farid, that worked!

Now I have another problem! After running the XP CD, it installed Service
Pack 1, after running the automatic updater it loads like 29 updates before
getting to Service Pack 2. As it is installing Service Pack 2, about halfway
through, the installer gets to the file "pscript.nsf" and stops. I then get a
message telling me that the Update has failed. I've tried to cleanup the
registry, defrag, everything else I can think of to make it a cleaner
install. I've then tried to redo the install of Service Pack 2 two more times
only to have it stop in the exact same place.

This is getting very frustrating. HELP!!!! again!
