CD Install Error

On a Windows 2000 Dell Inspiron:

When trying to install a particular program from CD, get
the error "Nav.Content.getMainNavMenu" with error code
2147221404.

No trouble with other CDs; got a replacement for the
problem CD and get the same error, so it's NOT the CD
itself; WAS able to install the same CD on an old Windows
95 computer without problem

Any suggestions appreciated - thanks.

Basic question here, is the program supposed to run on Windows 2000?

Yes, but thanks for posting. The CD is for a computerized test bank. My
initial post was incomplete (second-hand info from my husband). The CD
appears to *install* correctly. Then to run the program, the user must
first "create a new account" with some name/password info. On the "create
account" screen, you can enter name, address, email, create a password,
etc., but when entering SUBMIT, the "Nav.Content.getMainNavMenu" error comes
up (the main menu - which we never get to - is called the "Main Navigational
Menu").

If you attempt to then "sign on" to the program with the name and password
you just *attempted* to create, it says "USER NOT FOUND" (obviously, because
it did not correctly complete the "create account" step).

The CD vendor so far is of *no* help. They say they "don't have IT people"
and "it's never happened before." I find that unlikely.

Thanks.

Just guessing here but a few possibilities. Was the install performed
using an administrator's account? Is the program being run on the same
account as it was installed on? Maybe there was a hiccup during the
install and something did not get written? Does the "program" have "copy
protection" ie. does the CD has to be in the drive for it to work?

Yes, installed under administrator. Yes, CD is in drive.

We've uninstalled, deleted its registry keys, and reinstalled several times
with same results. Each time, we allow it to restart Windows when prompted.

Any other ideas? Thanks!

I think I would do an install on the 95 PC and start comparing where
files ended up in what subdirectories compared to the Win2000 PC. I'd
also look and see if there are "support" files required by the program.
(VBrun300.dll or what have you) Another possibility is to "copy" the
installation to the Win2000 PC from the Win95 PC.

Thanks again, Bob. I've compared the two installations, and so far all
looks the same. Next I'm going to try actually COPYING files from one to
the other.

We did get the following suggestion from the CD vendor:

"Networking itself won't cause a problem, but there is one situation in
Windows 2000 that would. If on the administrative account, limitations were
set on what for example the user accounts can use/access, then this would
prevent you from registering and/or utilizing "needed" components, which
would cause an error."

It was installed under the local Administrator account. I always thought
Administrator, by definition, had full permissions to everything. Can
Administrator sometimes have permission limits? If so, where/how would I
look for those? We've never encountered permission problems with any other
software on this laptop.

Thanks.

I am not aware of any permission limitations on the Administrator, but
you could look in Local Security Policy to see if anything got set in
there. At least the vendor is talking to you. :-)
