I have two CD-roms in my dell optiplex GX1. A regular (LG
cd-rom CRD-8400B)and a CD-RW (Matshita CD-RW CW-7585).
They were working for about a year. AFter (I believe) a
Win2K update they stopped being recognized by the OS. I
get: Error Code 31. "This depends on another device that
is not functioning properly".

I have disconnected/reconnected the drives, checked the
Dell BIOS (they are recognized there) to no avail. I've
uninstalled/reinstalled them. Tried different drivers,
searched for new drivers, but have been unsuccessful.

HELP!! Any ideas are welcome.

Uninstall the cd burning software again.
If you have a cd-rw plug in installed for media player, uninstall it as
well.
Back up your registry and use Regedt32 to navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Select\). Verify the current start value (0xn).
2. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet<nnn from step
1>\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. Delete UPPERFILTERS and LOWERFILTERS values.

4. Exit Regedt32.

5. Shutdown and restart.

6. Reinstall the software.
