I got vista home premium a week or so ago, and Sony has really made it a
nightmare getting things working properly thanks to horrible driver support
and poor instructions. Although I got everything working, for some reason
just today, my CD/DVD rom no longer works. It shows up in the device manager
with a yellow "!" and gives the following error:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and
to see if there is a solution available.

clicking check for solutions is useless and does nothing more than pop up a
window for about 5 seconds and dissapear.

when i click update driver, it says "Windows has determined the driver
sofware for your device is up to date." and thus, wont install a new one.

if I uninstall it then do the check for new hardware, after it detects it,
and tries to install a driver, it gives me an error saying: "Please consult
with your device manufacturer for assistance getting this device installed.

i found something with that name on the sony driver update website, but it
was a firmware update thing that did nothing.

what in the world could have caused this and what can i do to fix it???

well, i wasnt able to pinpoint the problem, but after a friend of mine came
over to troubleshoot, he suggested a system restore (since it HAD worked
before). so i system restored to a time just after purchasing it (just after
i installed all my drivers). after rebooting, it recognized my cd/dvd drive
no problem, and i proceeded to install software from the drive, as well as
burn a cd.

i dont know where the system restore option was in vista, but if you type
"system restore" in the start menu search, it will pop right up. just pick a
date or time when it worked, restore, and it should work for you.

Yes, I have the same problem, but with an NEC drive. There is a real
problem with this. From what I have determined, here is the real problem in
a nutshell:

Problem is that Microsoft sucks and the guy that wrote the CD/DVD part of
the operating system went on vacation and when he got back he was still hung
over from his Vegas trip (What happens in Vegas...you know). So anyway, his
boss comes in and is like, "Hey I need that part of the operating system
that deals with CD stuff, blah blah." The guy could barely concentrate and
he was like, "Oh man, I am so hung over, I didn't understand what he said!"
So the guy gave his boss the CD routine that he cut and pasted from some
other operating system (Apple probably) and the boss was like, "Good job
employee!" and the guy was like "Oh ya, I got out of that one and saved my
butt. I can fix it later." But by then the guy's wife was tired of him
working so much and being drunk all the time, so she had an affair. The guy
was so distraught about it, he couldn't concentrate on programming or work ,
so he let it slip. He was in the middle of a divorce when he realized
Microssft was SHIPPING already and he was like, "Oh man, I'm screwed!" It
was too late. Microsoft already shipped.
But since Microsoft is a top heavy management organization with no real
quality control, the guy was promoted. Stay tuned for more great software
from Microsoft!

I have the same problem with a Sony DVD burner. After installation the
burner seems to work OK, but after a time started to become very slowly (120
minutes to burn with speed 16X). Finally the DVD dissapeared from the
Explorer. The same situation as reported by Matt.
I bought a new burner, as I thought that the Sony was broken but I have the
same problem with the new burner a Plextor Px-755SA.
The big problem is that I even can´t do a clean install, what I suppose
could solve the problem. How do I make a clean install without the DVD
working??????

I have a Toshiba Satellite. My Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-K17A ATA worked fine for
two days. Now, it no longer recognizes the CD Rom drive at all and when I go
to check the device I get "Windows cannot load the device driver for this
hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

I see that others are reporting this same problem with other types of DVD
drives.

After two hours on customer service (Toshiba sucks with that!) the only
answer was to restore back to when it worked, which of course was some 48
hours and 12 disks and tons of data ago.

What to do? when will Microsoft deal with what is obviously a large scale
problem for folks?

Unfortunately this fix along with the other ones suggested (going into
regedit) has not worked for everyone. I have spent two weeks looking for
solutions and trying to fix this problem. I agree with the comment about when
the heck is mocrosoft giong to address this issue. I have found numerous
sites and discussion groups regarding this problem. Get on it
Microsoft!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is inexusable if your going to try and force a
new operating system one us at least have the decency to make sure we c an
get some of the most basic hardware on it working!!!!!!!!

fwiw, it shows up in XP from time to time also. It isn't just Vista.
