Does the disc even spin up when you put it in? You should see a small LED
activity indictor light in most cases, but you should also be able to hear
it spin up shortly after you insert it, regardless of what's on the disc.
Does the name of the disc appear in the Folders column of Explorer?
Go to Start>Run and run CMD. At the prompt, run
DIR D:
Do you get a list of files and folders or do you get an error or what?
Contrary to your opinion, I'm 99% certain that the problem IS hardware.
