CD/DVD rejected by combo writer when Windows Explorer window is open

Scenario: WinXP-SP2 CD/DVD Writer - SONY DVD RW DRU-820A

If I try to "mount" a CD or DVD (written or blank) with a Windows
Explorer window open the CD/DVD is rejected - the drawer opens almost
immediately after closing.

If I close down the Windows Explorer window then (most of the time) on
the next attempt at "mounting" the CD/DVD it is accepted.

Having Nero open in its explorer window causes the same effect.

Sometimes, just sometimes, even closing down Nero and Windows Explorer
doesn't do the trick - I have to restart XP to be able to mount a
CD/DVD :-(

This doesn't happen ALL the time - sometimes I CAN mount a CD/DVD even
with Windows Explorer open.

It's not a media problem because it happens with any media inserted in
the drive - old ones, newer ones, blanks, CDs, DVDs, etc.

Anyone have any ideas or seen this sort of problem before?

TIA for any light you can throw on the situation.

Did you install nero's drag and drop portion, this part of nero tends to
conflict with windows cd ability, uninstall the drag and drop portion of nero.

First of all, thank you for the reply and my apologies for the delay
in replying but I was travelling away from home.

No, I never installed the drag-n-drop portion of Nero - never liked
it, also had always had the same impression in previous incarnations
of Nero - that it interfered with Windows.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

The problem is intermittent (just like my wife's temper so I guess
that I'll just have to learn to live with it (like I did with her

I might try updating my Nero to a newer version (I'm using v6) but I
am always loath to "upgrade" to "newer" software as they always seem
to consume more and more system resources

Once again thanks for replying - it was worth the shot
