For a reason only known to XP the drive was being identified as a D: drive
(not illogical in itself), but apparently it was conflicting with the
\\server\d\. I have no idea it did not default to Local D as there is a
Local C. The drive therefore was identified as drive I on both machines and
they are now recognized by Explorer and My Network places. I had to make
those changes. One cannot relabel the drive letters in Windows 98.
Everything is now working. Thanks to all for your comments.
