CD/DVD drives show up as Hard Disk Drives in My Computer

For some reason my CD and DVD drives now appear as hard disk drives
under my computer in Windows XP. They have the same drive letters, they
are detected properly in the BIOS screen, and the drives appear to work
normally in Windows, except that I periodically get reminders warning me
about low disk space as you would normally for a hard disk drive, when I
insert a cd for example.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the CD/DVD drives in Device
Manager and they're detected properly and appear as 'Devices with
Removable Storage' - until the next reboot, when they show up again as
hard disk drives. Does this suggest something to do with the registry?

The only thing I can think of is that I'm unable to start the logical
disk manager service - 'error 2, the system cannot find the file
specified', or 'error 1068, the dependency service or group failed to
start' (when I try to start the logical disk manager administrative
service). I've checked the dependencies of each in Administrative tools
> Services and they appear to be started properly (RPC, plug and play).

Could anyone please suggest how to get my CD and DVD drives to show up
again in My Computer as Devices with removable storage?

Thanks,

Keith

Thanks, tried it and rebooted, but it's the same - the cd and dvd drives
show up as hard drives in My Computer.

Well, seems like I solved the issue: loaded into safe mode and noticed
there that the CD/DVD drives appear as "devices with removable storage"
in My Computer.

So I deleted the CD/DVD drives from the device manager while still in
Safe Mode, rebooted the computer normally, and they now appear as
"devices with removable storage" and not "hard disk drives"!

Spoke too soon, rebooted again and ... the CD/DVD drives show up as hard
drives again. :-(

Why do they show up as CD/DVD drives in Safe Mode but as hard drives
when I boot normally?
