CD/DVD Drives Are no Longer Recognized

I don't know if there is a connection, but this problem just arose, after I
installed the newest critical updates for Windows XP (Home Edition).

Anyway, I have a DVD drive and a CD Burner on my system. It has just
stopped recognizing either drive. When I go into Device manager I get the
message:
"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration
information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

If I try to troubleshoot all I'm told to do is to uninstall and reinstall
using add hardware - it didn't work. Reseating the cables didn't work and
restoring to a prior setting using system restore didn't work..

Any idea what the problem or, more important, what the solution may be?

Try uninstalling them from your Device Manager. Right click on the
drives, then choose uninstall. Also, can try reading these two:
