Cd/DVD drives disappear

I lost my CD/DVD drives from the system device profile. I even bought a new
IDE controller, installed it, and it reconized the drives on and off for a
while before complete losing them again. I was able to see files in the
directory of one (I have both a Toshiba DVD and a Iomega CD-RW drive) for a
short while before I lost site of both drives again. Occasionally, the CD-RW
will eject and close seemingly at random, but the drives will still not show
up in the System profile nor in explorer. This is on a SystemMax PC with XP
professional. The hard drive is connected to the motherboard primary IDE and
the machine has a Zip 250 and Jazz 2GB drives as well (which are visible and
usable).

I'd appreciate any insights.

Suspect the PSU is insufficient for the number of devices you appear to have
connected.

Diagnostic utilities might help you post complete details, use Everest, +
Storage,
Logical drives, right click "copy all" and paste to your post. Also, do the
same for your Physical drives info for each HD and each Optical drive..If you
have an IDE controller card include that info as well, thanks..

Everest is good but I'll miss Aida32 for obvious reasons, compare both..

What burning software do you use..? What version..?
Burning CD/DVD's in XP, a good read..

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to first try reducing the load on the power
supply per Cari's comment. If that doesn't work, I'll get into the gory
details that you suggest.

An IT support colleague at work also suggested this possibility. I'll detach
two of the other drives that I never use and see if that helps. Thanks.
